Benefits (big and small) define what we want (with no solutions in their description). Recording all the benefits everyone wants is an essential first step in problem solving, as the TRIZ solving of a problem = delivering best benefits with the least costs and harms. Benefits are delivered by functions and the essential logic of TRIZ is only delivered if these two are never mixed up.
For example, if when choosing a car, we say we want a small one – we are describing a function/feature but not the benefits we want. Benefits are uncovered by asking 'Why Small?'. This reveals the benefits which might include being easy to park, and fuel efficient. The feature ‘Small’ is just one way to achieve these but is just one of many solutions. When we confuse functions and benefits we restrict potential solutions, as in the cartoon.
