This is one of the most crucial of the TRIZ creativity tools: thinking of our Ideal helps us vision the perfect end result - no constraints â€“ no â€śwe canâ€™t have this becauseâ€¦.â€ť Think like Leonardo da Vinci who said â€śThink of the end before the beginningâ€ť. We focus on what we want rather than what we currently have. The underlying philosophy of TRIZ is to deliver more for less, finding solutions to problems for a minimum of cost and harm. The concept of an Ideal frees thinking away from why something canâ€™t be done, to what might be possible and how to achieve it.
Contradictions and the 40 Inventive Principles
TRIZ offers ways of solving the most fundamental and difficult problems. This day introduces you to the 40 ways of solving contradictions. The distillation of knowledge in the 40 Principles guides you to powerful solution triggers to generate new ideas.
TRIZ TRENDS - USING THE PAST TO PREDICT THE FUTURE

This unique TRIZ approach shows how to predict future technologies, new products and improvement of current systems using the 8 TRIZ Trends of Evolution. The 8 Trends (each with their own subsets - lines of evolution) are powerful problem solving triggers. The Trends also have great strategic power when used in planning and research. For many users, learning the Trends gives more problem solving directions than other tools.
Examples are given on how to match the Trends to developing products and then how to use them to generate many solutions to strengthen and protect patents. This involves using the Solution Maps and applying them, when appropriate, to your own companyâ€™s problems.
THINKING IN TIME AND SCALE
This powerful tool helps teams and individuals with clarity of thought, problem definition and all possible solution options. It captures how to adopt innovative behaviour, and shows how to problem solve like the most clever and creative individuals who think about solutions without constraints (initially they donâ€™t judge and therefore squash any emerging ideas as impracticable or wacky). The day closes with an exercise generating solutions to a problem by thinking in time and scale.

Learn the most easily accessible, and perhaps most powerful thinking and innovation tools for problem understanding - the TRIZ tools for uncovering and solving contradictions.
This workshop includes a number of exercises to give confidence in defining and solving Contradictions with the 40 Principles. Delegates are shown how to use our online tool - the Effects Database - and how this can be utilised in solving contradictions effectively.
There are two kinds of contradictions defined in TRIZ
1. Technical Contradictions - When Problem solving involves understanding and resolving conflicting requirements - improvement in one part means something else getting worse; in TRIZ this is called a technical contradiction, such as strength versus weight. Technical contradictions are solved using the Contradiction Matrix and the 40 Principles.
2. Physical Contradictions - When opposite benefits are required but often at different times or places, this is called a Physical Contradiction which can be solved with the TRIZ Rules for Separation and the 40 Principles.
Identification of available resources around any problem is essential for finding good, cost effective, environmentally friendly solutions. Unlike any other problem solving technique the TRIZ definition of a resource is all-encompassing and focuses even on apparently negative or harmful resources.
This workshop includes learning exercises which build on TRIZ knowledge and enable delegates to try TRIZ tools on real problems. Learning TRIZ helps everyone understand that they are very creative and can summon this creativity for problem solving when required, and not have to wait for an inspired brainwave, or sudden understanding of the real problem and its solutions. TRIZ gives us systematic creativity on demand.

These TRIZ tools for effective creative thinking complement most company problem solving toolkits. They include Size-Time-Cost, Smart Little People and Thinking in Time and Scale. They are simple to use in directed brainstorming and effective in producing creative breakthroughs. A number of practical exercises put the tools into practice.
Give your brain a boost with the TRIZ Creativity Tools
This is the TRIZ discipline and process for mapping systems with problems by listing all the components and all their interactions. TRIZ Function Analysis differs from other forms in that it includes all the negative, ineffective and excessive interactions in the system. Sometimes the harmful elements are key to potential solutions.
All interactions are expressed as Subject-Action-Object and it is important to use simple, clear language (no acronyms) in order to structure the problem correctly. Correct use of this tool allows direct access to the worldâ€™s knowledge (which is similarly structured) to locate the best solutions.
The Oxford Creativity TRIZ Function Analysis is rigorous, and leads to solving contradictions and to solving problems using our simple Standard Solutions. TRIZ Function Analysis is powerful and links with other popular problem solving tool-kits like Value Engineering, Six Sigma and Lean Sigma all of which (like TRIZ) have their roots in the middle of the last century.
Simplification or Trimming
Once the problems have been identified from the Function Analysis diagram the first step is to simplify the system using the TRIZ Standard Solutions for System Simplification (also known as the Trimming Rules). Often this step will eliminate problems and reduce the cost and increases system Ideality.
Oxford Creativity Standard Solutions
This is a simple but comprehensive list of all recorded solutions in the patent database. It shows the general solutions of:-
- how to do something
- dealing with harm (prevent, transform, block)
- how to improve something (or an action) we already have
- detecting or measuring something
- simplifying and making cheaper
The Standard Solutions can show you how to deal with all kinds of harms
Oxford Creativityâ€™s Standard Solutions are a simpler but equally powerful alternative to the traditional TRIZ tools of Altshullerâ€™s Substance-Field Analysis (also known as Su-Fields / S-Fields) and the 76 Standard Solutions. Altshullerâ€™s Substance-Field Analysis offers innovative solutions to inventive problems, but many people found the method tedious, hard to understand and difficult to remember when solving problems.
Standard Solutions are very simple and general lists of all the ways to solve problems recorded by science and technology, particularly in patents. We use the Standard Solutions once we have identified the problem type â€“ such as if we have something harmful. We can then step through all the ways to stop harmâ€¦
- prevent that harm happening at all;
- transforming it so it is no longer harmful (perhaps even useful);
- block, or prevent the harm so it no longer causes a problem.
