Cull expectations for USA Engineers & Scientists – bravery & humour

donkey 1&2 landscape

Delivering an early evening In-house Innovation Webinar (midnight UK time) to a USA Professional Engineering Association I heard about the that week’s mass layoffs of some of their technical teams. Their cheerfulness and resilience was astonishing. Tales were exchanged of engineers and scientists arriving at work and only learning of their dismissal by being locked out. The waste of talent, knowledge and experience seems reckless and full of risk to valuable and essential industries, and harmful to everyone.

I have had the privilege of problem solving with brilliant and dedicated technical people over the last 20 years. TRIZ reveals and harnesses their extraordinary knowledge and cleverness. In 2/3 day Oxford TRIZ workshops they have always rapidly located relevant, clever and resourceful solutions and all appreciate the brain power and clarity TRIZ releases in them.

It is galling that our most brilliant people – our engineers and scientists - may be the most under appreciated. Rarely do UK obituaries feature technical people but focus on actors, writers and politicians. Honour and fame is peculiarly skewed in Britain and apparently we have more statues of goats than women, and only a handful honouring our engineers. The creation of the steam engine may have contributed more to the security, progress and success of humankind in the last two centuries than anything else, yet technical teams remain undervalued and underpaid.
